Grand Knight’s Message
Hello everyone,
Warning, this is going to be a long newsletter. Please read the whole thing so you don’t miss anything.
Now that Lent is officially started, I hope you find some quiet time to engage in prayer, attend stations of the cross, and receive Reconciliation. To quote Fr. Smith , “Don’t just give something up for Lent, but do something for someone.”
I hope to see you at the South Akron Knights of Columbus Lenten Fish Frys. They are held each Friday during Lent. The first one had quite a crowd and it was nice to see so many people. Thank you to the following who ensure the fish fry runs smoothly: Bob Capron, Jerry Paridon, Ernie Hindinger, Dave DeShane, Shawn Needham, Damian Sedlock, Fred Cafarelli and Vince Gross. Also, a shout out to all the great volunteers from the morning crew all the way to clean up. Teamwork makes it look easy!
Congratulations to the winners of the South Akron K of C Building Maintenance and Repair Raffle. Thank you to Brother Fred Cafarelli for taking this raffle on and selling out all the tickets so quickly. Mrs. Patty VanPelt, Mrs. Mary White, and Mrs. Karen Capron, who also happen to be past Grand Knight wives, pulled the winning tickets. The winners were 3rd place Dave DeShane for $500, 2nd place Mike Morris for $1,000 and grand prize winner Joe Koehler with $2,000.
Throughout the year, we have multiple fundraisers for both council #3410 and the hall itself. I want to share some of the results from them. The Football Crazr raised $1,176 and went toward purchasing the AED for the hall. Also, Brother Shawn Needham reports that 49 people have already had their lottery ticket number drawn from the lucky lottery number ticket sales for January – March. If one was you, congratulations. Cash Bonanza fundraiser tickets will be mailed out and available at the hall soon.
I wanted to let everyone know that our fundraising helps support some local needs. At last month’s council meeting it was approved to grant two financial assistance requests. The first one is for the Special Olympics Spring Track and Field Event at Nordonia Schools. We approved $200 towards their track and field event where many students with disabilities from Summit County and the surrounding areas will participate. We also approved a donation of $300 for Just a Dad from Akron, a local business, and all he is doing in Akron and specifically the Kenmore area.
There have been quite a few events at the hall lately and activities outside the hall, as well. I hope you take advantage of doing things both at the hall and around town. If you have not joined us for an event, please come on out. We would love to see you. As always, future events are listed later in the newsletter.
Let me end with one more quote from Fr. Smith for Lent. “Leave behind your old tired sins that drive others crazy, and don’t go back to them after Easter.”
Be good everyone.
Steve Dort, Grand Knight

St. Patrick’s Day Celebration
On Wednesday, March 15 at our weekly drawing, we will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with a special potluck. Instead of hotdogs we will be having a Corned beef, cabbage, potatoes and carrots meal. $7 per person. There will be a signup sheet starting March 1 in the lounge or call or text Steve Dort. If you are joining us on March 15, wear your green and feel free to bring a dessert to share.
Nine Nights of Prayer
The Cleveland Diocese is offering another round of Nine Nights of Prayer March 17-25 with doors opening 8 p.m. The only Akron area church participating is St. Paul Church in Firestone Park. There are eight other parishes participating, but they are all outside Summit County. If you attend one or more nights, please send Steve Dort an email so he can gather a total number of participants for our council.
Theology on the Rocks
Monday, March 20 at The Tangier, 507 S. Cleveland Massillon Road in Fairlawn. The speaker is Keith Johnson, the Parish Catechetical Leader at St. Sebastian Parish. His topic is: “Faith of the Fathers: The Ancient Fath and its Modern Implications.”
Polka Mass
Volunteers are needed to work as a committee on having a Polka Mass and Polka Celebration weekend. If you are interested in helping out, please reach out to Steve Dort
Bocce Ball
We have had some interest in restarting bocce ball. If you would like to volunteer to organize some bocce ball, please contact Steve Dort. In the meantime, if you have any interest in playing let him know.
Craft Fair
On Saturday, April 22, there will be a craft fair in the hall from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tell your friends and family to come out and take a look at some great spring and summer items on the 33 vendor tables. It is free admission to shop. Look for flyers in the lounge/ hall to take with you to help get the word out.
Mass Intentions for our K of C Brothers
On Saturday, April 22 and Sunday, April 23, all Masses at St. Paul Catholic Church in Firestone Park will be for the intention of our Knights of Columbus Members. Even if you are not a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, please consider attending a mass that weekend. Not only will the intention be shared at the beginning of mass, but the Brothers at each mass will collectively walk the gifts to the altar. Mass times are Saturday at 4:30 p.m., Sunday at 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m. for the extraordinary form, and 11:30 a.m. It would be nice to see us rotate this across the different parishes of council #3410 each year.
Ignite Young Adult Conference
Ignite is a single day conference on April 29, meant to draw young adults from the Cleveland diocese and all neighboring dioceses. The purpose of the conference is meant to instill young adult Catholics with the knowledge of their worth and dignity in the eyes of Jesus, surround themselves with a community of other passionate young adults that they can grow with, and equip them to be sent on mission to serve and evangelize. All in an effort to Ignite the nation on fire by creating young adult saints of our time. Register online here. If any younger member is interested but the $55 registration fee is not doable, please reach out to Brother Michael Payne as council #3410 may be able to offer financial assistance.
2023 Membership Dues is Due
This includes dues for Brother Knights, spouses, and social dues are due now. Reminder you must have your dues paid to enter the weekly/monthly drawings at the hall. If any Brother has a question about their dues please speak with Brother Mike Herold.
