Grand Knight’s Message

Hello everyone,

In January, we had two events that were well attended. The first event was teaming up with the University of Akron. We invited other local councils to our hall for hot dogs and snacks, followed by attending the Akron Zips Men’s Basketball game. We had 33 participants. Our second event was our charity euchre tournament and chili cook off. We had 52 players and 11 chili entries. Our charity was for the Knights of Columbus Wheelchair Global Mission. We raised enough money for three wheelchairs. Thank you to Jerry Paridon and Missy Dort for running the event and making it a success.

Also, in January, I attended the St. Francis De Sales ministry fair. Along with the help of Mike Payne, Rod White, and Owen Shaffer, we were able to attract several new candidates. We have enough interest to hold an exemplification (degree) ceremony on Sunday, February 25.

Fred Cafarelli is selling raffle tickets to raise money for the hall’s maintenance and repair fund. 100 raffle tickets are being sold for $100 each. There will be 3 winners. First place wins $2,000, 2nd place $1,000, and 3rd place $500. The drawing will take place after all tickets are sold. See Brother Fred Cafarelli for tickets.

Coming up this month is the kickoff of the Knights of Columbus Ca$h Bonanza. The Kickoff will be February 3 at our hall, for all local councils. Brother Don White and his wife Mary will once again be our point of contact for this charity event, which just happens to be the largest charity fundraiser for the Knights of Columbus organization. Last year, council #3410 turned in 2,070 tickets. I think we can beat that number this year. Tickets will be available soon and sell for $5 each.

Lenten Fish Fry’s start this month. We want to thank Brian Canale for volunteering over 2 hours of his time to help with the cleaning of our kitchen and the fryers in preparation for the 7 Friday dinners. If you want to volunteer at the fish frys, there are many different jobs and times available. Volunteer sign-up sheets are in the lounge.

I am also looking for someone to man a table for our council at the Friday fish frys. If you are willing to share information about Knights of Columbus and specifically council #3410 at this table for one or more weeks, please contact me.

Would you consider becoming an active council member in one of our elected positions? We will be holding elections again in the spring. Our last two elected position descriptions are later in the newsletter. If not an officer, would you consider being one of our directors: Faith, Family, Community or Life.

Make sure you attend this month’s council meeting where I will update everyone on our progress towards earning star council and what we need to do to finish off strong.

Ash Wednesday is February 14. Come celebrate Ash Wednesday and Valentine’s Day at the hall. We will not be having hotdogs that day but ordering non-meat pizza for everyone. Bring your favorite side dish or dessert to share.

Be good everybody,
Steve Dort, Grand Knight

Committee Updates:

The Faith committee: – Come out to St. Paul Parish on the weekend of March 23-24. The mass intentions for that weekend will be for council #3410. All Brothers attending a mass will carry the gifts to the altar together.

Membership Committee: We will be having our 2nd exemplification ceremony of the year on Sunday, February 25, at noon. This should enable us to meet our quota for the year! We will have an information table about the Knights of Columbus at our fish frys. If you would like to man a table during the fish frys please speak with Steve Dort.

Life Committee: The Euchre Tournament and Chili cookoff was a success. We raised enough money for three wheelchairs with the Global Wheelchair Program. Thanks to those that participated!

We can always use volunteers to step up and run different programs within our action of faith committees of faith, family, community, life and membership. If you can lend your talents to help, please come speak with Steve Dort.

Knights of Columbus Council Positions of the Month

Warden
The warden is responsible for the property owned by the council. He is also in charge of setting up meetings and leads both the inside and outside guards. Many college councils utilize the warden and guards as custodians of the campus ministry property which may include raking leaves, shoveling snow and assisting with interior maintenance.

Inside/Outside Guards
The inside and outside guards carry out tasks given to them by the grand knight and follow the warden’s orders. They are responsible for checking membership cards and allowing entrance to meetings. Councils should consider appointing additional inside and outside guards, especially among promising freshmen, as this provides early leadership opportunities.

2024 Membership Dues

It is time to pay dues for the 2024 calendar year. If you have not paid them for 2024, you risk your number being removed from the list for weekly drawings. This includes dues for Brother Knights, spouses, and social member dues. All dues can be paid at the hall.

Super Bowl Sunday

The hall will be open on Sunday, February 11, for the Super Bowl. Come on down and watch the game in the lounge. $10 donations will be collected at the door. There will be pizza, wings, Italian sandwiches, JoJo’s and snacks. The cash bar will also be open. Super Bowl squares are currently on sale in the lounge and each football quarter will have envelopes available on February 11.

Fish Fry

Lent begins Wednesday, February 14, and ends Saturday, March 30. The first fish fry is Friday, February 16. Volunteer sign-up sheets for the Lenten Fish Frys are in the lounge. If you are not able to volunteer, we hope to see you come out and enjoy a meal. Please share our Fish Fry information with family and friends. Menus will be printed soon, so keep an eye out! We will have the menu available on our website! Dine in, online ordering, phone-in and walk-in ordering are all available!

Craft Fair

On April 13, the hall will be open for a spring craft fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Last year was a great success! We are hoping to repeat that success. Please mark your calendar for some great shopping. Please share the date with family and friends. Please look for a volunteer sign up sheet for opportunities to help the day run smoothly.
