Grand Knights Message
Hello everyone,
As we head into the Advent and the Christmas season, I want to take a moment to look back at November which was full of acts of charity on behalf of everyone associated with Council #3410.
On Nov. 5, we had our South Akron Knights of Columbus Memorial Mass at Immaculate Conception. Over 40 Brother Knights and spouses attended. Fr. Michael B. Smith did a great job presiding over the mass. Thanks to all that were in attendance.
At our monthly council meeting, we donated $980 to three local charities. They are the Akron Police Department’s National Child Safety Council, The SERRA Club of Akron, and Catholic Charities of Summit County. If you would like to have input to where our charitable contributions go, I encourage you to attend our monthly council meetings on the first Tuesday of every month.
Thanks to Shawn Needham and his team for all their work putting on a successful reverse raffle. Congratulations to the last 5 who chose to split the grand prize.
Our November food drive was a huge success! Thanks to everyone’s generosity we had over 100lbs of food donated and collected $660 in the collection jar. Thanks to the South Akron Knights of Columbus CLC for donating $500 to the drive. Because over $500 was donated, the Supreme Council will refund council #3410 $100 which can be used towards other local charities throughout the year. Thanks to all that donated and the CLC.
One more piece of good news from November. Our council had a winner from the football crazr fundraiser. Congratulations to Patty VanPelt for having a winning ticket for week 1. Patty tied for the lowest total score of the week. Good luck to everyone during the remainder of the season.
Did you know that the Diocese of Cleveland has a podcast? If you listen to podcasts, check out Question of Faith with Fr. Damien and Mike Hayes. They just celebrated their 100th episode. Most episodes are short, around 20-25 minutes. Not only do they answer questions, but they give quick updates on things happening in the diocese.
On Wednesday, Dec. 20, we will have our weekly drawing and potluck in the hall for our K of C #3410 Christmas Celebration. Let’s make some delicious items to share with everyone. Feel free to try out that new recipe before you make it for your family. December 27 is our monthly drawing.
Looking into January, we have the Euchre Tournament and Chili Cook-off. This event will be held on Jan. 20. Sign-ups are in the lounge. $10 to play euchre and $5 to taste the different chilis. You may enter your chili for free!
Keep an eye out for more information on a K of C night with the Akron Zips at a men’s home basketball game at the JAR. This will be open to Brothers from surrounding councils.
Over the last two months, I have been adding the elected council positions descriptions to our newsletter. This month I am describing two more for you. Would you consider becoming an active council member in one of these positions? We will be holding elections again in the spring.
Missy and I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas.
Be good everybody,
Steve Dort, Grand Knight
Committee Updates:
The family committee: We had no nominees for the November family of the month. Please nominate a family for December by Dec. 15. Nominations forms are in
the hall. Please remember the family does not have to have a member, but are a positive example of a family with their parish.
Membership Committee: I will be at St. Francis De Sales on Jan. 7 during their ministry fair with recruitment information. If we have interest we will hold a 2nd exemplification for the year Also, during events at the hall, I hope to have a table set up for registrations. This includes Fish Fry Fridays. If you would like to man a table during the fish frys, please speak with me. We only need around 3 more new members to meet our quota for the year.
Faith Committee: The Faith Committee is partnering with St. Francis De Sales School for the Catholic Citizenship Contest. Their 8th graders were invited to write an essay on the topic “How can the church evangelize in the digital age?” Entries are due by Dec. 5.
We can always use volunteers to step up and run different programs within our action of faith committees of faith, family, community, life and membership. If you can lend your talents to help out, please come speak with me.
Knights of Columbus Council Position(s) of the Month
Chancellor The chancellor assists both the grand and deputy grand knights in the leading of the council by engaging and strengthening the council’s membership. His primary responsibilities include recruiting and retaining members and to this end he should set up events that display the values and principles of the Knights of Columbus. The chancellor should participate in the council’s degree team and should serve on both the Admission and Retention committees.
Treasurer The treasurer is responsible for managing the council funds, whether in bank or school accounts. He receives money from the financial secretary and deposits funds into council accounts. He is also responsible for paying all council expenses. He also balances and verifies the ledger and keeps the updated budget approved by the council.
Lucky Number Tickets
Remember to turn in your lucky number tickets. Drawing starts January 2, 2024. The hall still has tickets available. $10 each. They make great stocking stuffers. Call and leave a message at the office or email us.
Craft Fair
On April 13 the hall will be open for a spring craft fair. Last year was a success, and we are hoping to repeat that success. We still have about 10 tables left for crafters. If you are a crafter, please talk to Missy Dort about getting a table reserved.
Charity Euchre Tournament and Chili Cook-off
Grab some friends and join us at the hall on January 20 for a Chili Cook-off and Charity Euchre Tournament. Sign-up sheets are in the lounge or call or text Steve Dort to sign up. $10 to play euchre and $5 for chili tasting. Chili entries are free. Money will be collected at the door the day off. Doors open 3:30 p.m. and Euchre start at 5 p.m.
2024 Membership Dues
It is time to start thinking about dues for the 2024 calendar year. This includes dues for Brother Knights, spouses, and social members. If you can pay them at the hall before the year’s end, it will save money from mailing out cards and reminders. Reminder you must have your dues paid to be entered into the weekly/monthly drawings at the hall.
Lenten Fish Fry
Ash Wednesday is Feb. 14 and our first Lenten Fish Fry will start on Feb. 16, for the next seven Fridays. More information will be coming out. We want to encourage everyone to consider volunteering.
