Grand Knight’s Message

Can you believe it is August already! Summer is flying by. July…gone. We had our July monthly meeting a week later than normal, which makes the August meeting on Tuesday, August 1, come quickly. Mark your calendars and hope to see you there.

At our July meeting, we approved the transfer of Joe Reiner. If you get a chance to meet him, please welcome him into Council #3410. Our Chaplain, Father Michael B. Smith, discussed how important council membership is. We need to increase and maintain membership. He encouraged all current members to attend our monthly meetings.

I want to personally thank Jerry Paridon for taking a Saturday out of July to attend the Ohio State Tour. Jerry brought back all our documents for this upcoming year, including the “Football Fund Crazr Sweepstakes” tickets. Last year we sold 168 tickets and, if you remember, we purchased an A.E.D. for the hall with the proceeds.

The “Football Fund Crazr Sweepstakes” is a 10-week portion of the NFL schedule. (Nov. 5 – Jan. 7). There are 23 winners weekly, ranging from $40 -$400. Each ticket is $20 (or broken down is only $2 per week.) South Akron Knights of Columbus receives $5.50 for each ticket sold up to 137 tickets and then the percentage goes up after that number is sold.

Star Council Update: As I mentioned in meetings and previous newsletters a goal for us is to achieve the Star Council award. In order to do that we need to have completed items in all their categories. Each category has a committee. See below for updates on the committees.

The Family Committee is up and running. Thanks to those of you that nominated families of the month for July. With those nominations, we have selected our first family of the month. I am pleased to announce that the Marc Compher family from St. Francis De Sales will be recognized as our July family of the month. Please nominate a family for August at the link later in the newsletter by August 15. The family committee is also planning a special Grandparents Day cookout on September 10. Look for more details below.

It is time to start planning and working on our recruitment for this fall. To lead the Membership Committee, I have reached out to our parishes and once we have the dates, I will be asking for volunteers to help at their parish weekend. I also plan to have recruitment tables at all our events this year. The plan is to hold an exemplification in the fall again.

Our other three committees are still in need of volunteers. Please consider signing up. Anyone can be on a committee whether a K of C Knight, a wife of a Knight or a social member.

The Life Committee can complete a Novena for Life, Support Special Olympics, Pregnancy aid/support, Christian Refugee Relief, Mass for people with special needs.
The Community Committee includes Coats for Kids, Clothing Donations, Free Throw championship for youth 9-14, citizenship essay contest and more.
The Faith Committee items can include supporting vocations, rosary, Sacramental Gifts, Memorial Mass, Ushering, holy hours and more.

Every Tuesday this summer, weather permitting, there will be bocce ball at the hall between 6-8 p.m. Where are all our bocce ball fans? Bring your chairs, BYOB and come out for some fun. Last week Dave DeShane represented the guys, and played with three lovely ladies. K of C knights, this week come out at 6 p.m. and then come inside at 7 p.m. for Rosary and our council meeting afterward.

I encourage everyone to come out on Wednesdays at the hall starting at 6 p.m. Sign the books for a chance to win the weekly/monthly drawing(s). Enjoy a hotdog and other delicious potluck items, plus socialization.

Please keep reading, as more information and events are listed later in the newsletter.

Be Good Everyone.
Steve Dort,
Grand Knight
